Looking to experience YCS in your school or parish, but don’t have the resources to start a local group just yet? No worries! Our friendly YCS workers are available to run a variety of different workshops for high school students.
What workshops are on offer?
We're flexible, and we'll be more than happy to customise the workshop theme and schedule to suit your needs. Our sessions can last from 30 minutes to 2 days, and can operate independently or as a part of another workshop/retreat. The possibilities are endless! Here's a list of example workshops we can run for you:
Review of Life
An interactive workshop that gives students the leadership tools and skills to take action on issues in their local communities based on their faith, developing lifelong active leaders
A space that allows students to reflect on their current situation and how faith plays a role in their life, assisting at paving their path as a Christian later in life
Small, interactive sessions that encourage students to think creatively and work collaboratively with likeminded peers
Hosted by past YCS students or workers, we can share our personal stories as to how YCS and taking action has developed us into the active leaders that we are today
Why YCS workshops are so unique
We've got the experience - YCS has been operating in Australia for decades, so we've got the history and the knowledge on how to engage with high school students effectively.
We're enthusiastic and relatable - with many of our YCS workers having recently graduated from high school themselves, they understand the realities of being a student! Students are often very receptive to guest speakers and workshops, as they're seen as something new and exciting.
We're flexible - as mentioned above, we are able to work with you. We understand that workshops aren't a one-size-fits-all event.
We're founded on Christian values - founded by Belgian Roman Catholic cardinal, Joseph Cardijn, our Review of Life focuses on the student reality and the Christian faith.
We're open - we understand that not all students are Christian, and respect that everyone is at different stages in their faith journey. YCS encourages open conversations, and we ensure that everyone feels included and their opinions respected.
What do the students get out of these workshops?
Practical Leadership Skills
YCS groups are student run, and our organisational model is focused on developing active Christian leaders. Students are given the tools to effectively communicate, organise and take action. With physical, take home resources, we make sure that each student feels empowered at the end of our workshops.
Strengthened Inter-student Relationships
YCS is relational at heart. We rely on communication between each other, and these workshops encourage students to work together for a collective goal. We've got plenty of experience at running engaging sessions and creating safe environments where everyone feels valuable.
The Review of Life focuses on what we believe as Christians and how we can take action. Faith amongst students is often a taboo subject due to it's personal nature - but we aim to break down those barriers, encouraging open and constructive dialogues between each other about our faith.
These events are designed to be fun! Students should feel excited and inspired after leaving these sessions, ready to pursue leadership opportunities within your local schools and parishes.
Check out Our Climate Justice Workshop!
In October 2016, 19 YCS students from the Townsville Diocese reviewed the topic of Climate Change – thanks to our Australian YCS Campaign for 2016-17: Climate Justice; Our Home, Our Future, Our Choice. From our Review of Life (SEE, JUDGE, ACT!), the passionate students wanted to educate local high school students on climate change and inspire them to take action towards climate justice. YCS decided they wanted to host an educational, action based workshop that was run entirely by high school students. The event would run through a see, judge, act process (the best method ever!), and should inspire the participants to take effective personal action, while inspiring schools to take effective collective action!
